In Qatar’s capital city of Doha, the almost futuristic architecture is inspired by old Islamic design, an exciting mix of old and new. The I.M. Pei-designed limestone Museum of Islamic Art is built on its own island and appears to be floating. The collection of 7th to 19th-century calligraphy, jewelry, and textiles makes it one of the most dazzling galleries in the region.
Across the street, Souq Waqif exhibits an iconic maze of shops selling fabrics, spices, sweets, souvenirs, and suitcase-friendly works of art. From here, you can jump on a wooden dhow for a tour of the bay to get a different view of the city or stroll along the Corniche, a seven-kilometer promenade.
In the north of the town, The Pearl, a colorful pedestrian-friendly commercial area of canals and bridges, juts out into the Gulf – a perfect place to moor your yacht. Nearby Katara Cultural Village is the hub of the arts, home to halls, galleries, an outdoor amphitheater, and the opera house.
It’s easy to quickly escape to the desert to drive around the dunes for an afternoon or sit on the Persian Gulf beaches until the sunsets. Even the desert has art: the outdoor “East-West/West-East” installation northwest of Doha is a set of steel structures that brings the magnitude of the desert into true focus.
