As the gastronomic capital of France, Lyon has a lot to live up to foodwise, which it effortlessly delivers, all the way from the velvet chairs of the Michelin-starred restaurants to the banquettes of the traditional bouchons – bistros serving traditional Lyonnaise specialties like sausages, duck pâté, roast pork, and the famous fish dumplings or quenelles. Be sure to pop into Les Halles de Lyon for a treat, one of the city’s top foodie hotspots.
Cultural treasures are everywhere you look, with private tours of Vieux Lyon delivering old-world ambiance via the narrow laneways, quiet courtyards, artisanal shops, and sunny cafés in the neighborhoods of Saint-Jean and Saint-Georges. A traditional puppet show will be easy to find here. Find time for a quiet moment in Saint-Jean Cathedral, along with the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière.
Musée des Beaux-Arts is considered the best museum in France next to the Louvre, with its large collection of Impressionists and antiquities housed in a former convent. Afterward, take a break in the Parc de la Tête d’Or – almost 300 acres of lush greenery in the northern part of the city, replete with gardens, ponds, boating, cycling, and a small zoo.
And for your home base, the Cour des Loges five-star luxury hotel and spa is a Renaissance jewel in the heart of Vieux Lyon with easy access to everything. Nearby Villa Florentine is a 17th-century hillside retreat and the upscale Villa Maïa is the epitome of French “art de vivre” luxury. You may never want to leave.
