First built on the pearl trade, but now solidly running on oil, Abu Dhabi is the region’s cultural capital as well, the abundance of museums including the Louvre Abu Dhabi underlining that fact. Art is also infused into the city’s dramatic architecture, evidenced in complexes like the Emirates Palace five-star hotel and the white marble domes of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a façade that speaks to past empires with art that is thoroughly grounded in the present.
Stepping off the mainland, Yas Island is the home of a Grand Prix race track, a fine beach, a golf course, and amusement parks that include Ferrari World – with its famous Formula Rosser roller coaster – and the indoor Warner Bros World. Al Hudayriat Island is an excellent spot to unwind. as are Corniche Beach and secluded Saadiyat Beach.
Further away from the glass and steel yet right in the middle of town, you’ll find winding waterways to paddle through in Mangrove National Park, a biodiversity hotspot and educational center teeming with wildlife, including flamingos and heron.
