For a city of 15 million, Istanbul never seems as crowded as it should be. That said, its immensely important historic sites are visited by another 12 million each year. Built-in the 6th century, the Hagia Sophia Holy Grand Mosque is perhaps the most important religious structure of all time, the largest church in the world for more than 1,000 years. Of the many mosques, Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) is the most beautiful, a marvel of Ottoman architecture.
The treasury rooms at Topkapi Palace, home of Ottoman sultans between 1500 and 1850, present a feast of artifacts – including the 86-carat Spoonmaker’s Diamond. Dolmabahçe Palace is filled with gold, chandeliers, candelabras, and baccarat crystal throughout its 265 rooms.
Grandeur aside, the Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest covered markets in the world, dating from 1461, its 3,000 stalls famous for jewelry, carpets, leather, embroidery, spices, and antiques. And the Spice Market near the ferry docks yields superb coffee and everything your spice cabinet may be missing.
Luxury shopping awaits on the Asian side of town along Bagdat Avenue, where small boutiques mingle with both high-end and mid-range international retailers. Visitors can also experience the city’s opulence with a cruise on the celebrated Bosphorus Strait, whose banks are lined with multimillion-dollar historical mansions.
